GIRLS' NIGHT OUT
by LIZ FENTON and LISA STEINKE
For estranged friends Ashley, Natalie, and Lauren, it’s time to heal the old wounds between them. Where better to repair those severed ties than on a girls’ getaway to the beautiful paradise of Tulum, Mexico? But even after they’re reunited, no one is being completely honest about the past or the secrets they’re hiding. When Ashley disappears on their girls’ night out, Natalie and Lauren have to try to piece together their hazy memories to figure out what could have happened to her, while also reconciling their feelings of guilt over their last moments together.
Was Ashley with the man she’d met only days before? Did she pack up and leave? Was she kidnapped? Or worse—could Natalie or Lauren have snapped under the weight of her own lies?
As the clock ticks, hour by hour, Natalie and Lauren’s search rushes headlong into growing suspicion and dread. Maybe their secrets run deeper and more dangerous than one of them is willing—or too afraid—to admit.

If you are looking for something to read over the summer, this would be a great choice! What's not to keep you hooked? This is a tale of three women, who have become estranged and distant, who decide to meet up again on holiday and mend the differences between them. As you can tell from the blurb, things to do not go in any way according to plan and immediately, from the very opening, the reader realises something is very awry.
Just as the reader is perplexed and confused by the scene laid before them in the first chapter, so is the character. Immediately the reader and the character are in the same situation and not only does that help us to connect and relate to the woman, the character's repeated questions - and that fact that they're the same questions we also have - makes it really intriguing. It's a very dramatic opening. It also very clearly indicates what kind of story we can expect - one full of drama, tension and suspense.
Fenton and Steinke have created a novel that is full of layers. The very structure of the novel reflects the dynamics and relationship between the women and shows us that this is not a straightforward story. The use of multiple points of view, and the alternating between these characters narratives, prepares us for the intricate relationship between them and gives the writers potential to show how messy and intwined the lives can become.
As well as various points of view, the story jumps backwards and forwards - not always by much, but this probably makes the timeline more complicated and more suspenseful. We move from the day before Ashley's disappearance, to three days after, to one day before to two days after as we try to put together the puzzle and seek out the answers from the clues that are scattered in front of us. At times it requires concentration to keep up with the shifts but as you become more immersed in the story, it's easier to keep straight and allow yourself to become caught up in the mystery.
The dialogue feels authentic, the characters feel believable and the location is well described and adds further atmosphere to the story. This is a good, satisfying read which will hold your attention and make you think about friendships!
Fenton and Steinke have created a great premise for their thriller as friendships between women are always a great hook and always intriguing to the reader. Not only is it a good premise but they follow through with a well managed plot. If you enjoy Liane Moriarty, then you'll enjoy this. If you like trying to work out who is telling the truth and who you should trust, this book is for you!
