KISS ME, KILL ME
by J S CAROL

She thought she could trust him. She was wrong . . .

Until they're married.
Then Zoe realises that Dan is controlling, aggressive, paranoid.
And there's no way out.

Or is there?

When Zoe discovers that she's pregnant, she realises that the only way she can keep her baby is to leave Dan.
But that's harder than you think.
He found her once before, and she knows he can find her again.
But Dan has plans of his own - plans that don't necessarily include Zoe.

EXTRACT

Zoe glanced at her cell phone then moved the drape aside so she could see the street. Daniel had said seven thirty, and it was now seven thirty-four, and she needed to ease herself back from the cliff edge, because the fact that he was four minutes late did not mean that she had been stood up. She looked at her cell phone again. No texts, no missed calls.
‘Would you relax!’ Lizzy called from the sofa.
‘I am relaxed.’
‘If that’s relaxed, I’d hate to see what you’re like when you’re tense.’
‘I want tonight to go well, that’s all.’
‘In that case you need to take a chill pill. Just be yourself.’
Zoe shot her a sceptical look.
Lizzy closed her magazine and placed it on the sofa. ‘I’m serious, Zo. If Dan sees you for the amazing, beautiful, talented person you are, he’s not going to be able to resist. And anyway, if it doesn’t work out there are plenty more men out there.’
‘Maybe for you there are. But this is me we’re talking about.’
Lizzy shook her head. ‘Zoe, Zoe, Zoe. You have no idea, do you? You need to have more confidence in yourself. Maybe you should take a self-assertiveness course.’
‘Ha ha.’
‘I’m serious. Go through life with the expectation that people are going to walk all over you and that’s exactly what’s going to happen. Are you a lioness or a doormat? Let me hear that roar.’
‘Roar,’ Zoe replied, deadpan and without any real feeling.
‘Just be yourself, and you’ll be fine. That’s all I’m saying.’
‘He doesn’t like being called Dan, by the way. He prefers Daniel.’
‘Whatever.’
Lizzy went back to her magazine and Zoe looked out the window again. Droplets of rain had collected on the glass, and the street had been washed clean. She was about to let the drape drop back when Daniel’s Porsche turned the corner. By the time it had pulled up at the kerb, she was already reaching for her coat.
‘Not so fast,’ Lizzy told her. ‘You don’t want to appear desperate. Let him come to the door to meet you. Make him work a little.’
Zoe glanced out the window just in time to see Daniel walk across the sidewalk. He disappeared into the building. Less than a minute later there was a knock on the door. It felt like ten.
‘Remember,’ Lizzy said. ‘No hurrying. You’re in control here. You’re calling the shots.’
Zoe forced herself to walk along the hall; she did a slow count to five and opened the door. When Daniel saw her he smiled his amazing smile, and all her stress evaporated in an instant.
‘Sorry I’m late,’ he said. ‘I had a meeting that went on longer than it should have. I thought I’d get here in time but the traffic was a nightmare. And, of course, my cell phone battery died.’

‘Don’t worry about it. You’re here now. That’s the important thing.’
