FIRST MONDAY CRIME: NOVEMBER

STUART MACBRIDE, ELODIE HARPER, VASEEM KHAN & SIMON BOOKER
moderated by BARRY FORSHAW

I am very late in posting my review of First Monday Crime - in fact it was last Monday that I was there, listening to these fabulous authors talking about their new books and all things Crime Fiction. This is only the second First Monday Crime event I have been to, but I have really enjoyed listening to the panels in such a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, sitting alongside fellow book bloggers and then getting the chance to chat with authors and people from the world of publishing in the pub afterwards. First Monday Crime is going to have to become a regular feature in my calendar!

The evening got off to a great start with the expert Barry Forshaw starting off the proceedings by introducing each of the panelists and then challenging them with some excellent questions.

Did you know....?

Simon Booker and his partner Mel McGrath often discuss how to murder each other over breakfast and Simon revealed that he did actually know the perfect way to murder your partner in the bath without getting caught....

Elodie Harper won a short story competition which was judged by Stephen King!

Stuart MacBride talked passionately about how readers and writers of Crime Fiction should not be treated any differently to other readers and writers - it is as literary and as valuable.

Vaseem Khan thinks that there's no dark place where you shouldn't go in crime...

The whole panel agreed that literary awards were definitely something to aspire to and that although every author just wanted people to read their books (especially Vaseem who waited 23 years for his first novel to be published!), everyone wanted an award too!

Top Tips?

The one common mistake writers make is not finishing!
Read widely and write for yourself - don't copy or mimic the market or another author.

Thank you so much to all the authors and to Barry for his great questions and a really interesting discussion. It was a fab evening and thanks to City University for hosting and First Monday Crime for organising a great event!

If you can, I highly recommend that you try to pop along to these events in the future. The next panel is on 4th December and it is an amazing line up with Chris Whitaker, Susi Holliday, Louise Jensen and Claire McGowan.
